Happy New Year! Need a Pickle?

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2011

I don’t plan to stay up all night partying and tooting in the New Year though I am excited to see what the New Year brings. Even though I know one day is the same as another there is still something magical to me about looking forward to a new beginning.

Earlier in the day I wrote about making a sandwich. Nothing major – but life is made up of little struggles and this one had a very happy ending. Smack.

pickle jar with a smirky smile I wanted to put some pickles on my bologna sandwich and try as I might I could not get the lid from the pickle jar unscrewed. I used tons of hot water straight from the tea kettle, banged it and knocked it and it still refused to budge. So then I prayed three Hail Mary’s to see if the Blessed Mother was into tight jar lids. Nope. She did give me the nudge though to go look it up on Google. Lots of people gave the same advice I had already tried but one person had a little extra.

Tip from Yahoo Answers: you can tap the jar with a butter knife. you don’t hit very hard, but it break the seal. you have to strike from the center outward. when I do it right it usually makes a slight dent on the outside of the jar lid. my mom can do it with no dent though. you kind of have to see it. good luck

I think what did it was the part of striking the lid from the center outward. I had been striking around the edges. It also helped that he said it had to be hard enough to leave a dent. Anyway when I followed those directions it opened very easy!

I also liked the first tip that said to use a thick rubber band around the lid, but since I only had thin bands I skipped over that one. I know there are all sorts of fancy kitchen gadgets to open stuck jar lids and I had that on my shopping list but I wanted the pickles now!

It doesn’t seem like a big thing to write about - but I take my victories seriously no matter how small!

I pray the New Year will be full of many blessed and victorious moments for you -

 BIG

and small.

Happy, Happy New Year!
